DIY: picture frame transformation

I finally got the urge to tackle one of the projects that have been sitting around the family room, garage, office, and all over my place.

First, I took the brown paper off the back of the frame.  It was already torn and no possible way of reusing it, so I had a blast ripping it off

After taking off the brown paper I discovered how the poster was being kept in the frame.  Lots and lots of little nails.  To be honest I was a little nervous of what I would find under the backing.  But I was very relieved to see the nails, because they were so easy to remove.

After removing the poster and glass, I sprayed the frame with Krylon flat black paint.  I did three coats, because the awful lovely gold color just kept peeping through.

I think that three coats did the trick, don't you?  No more gold!

I decided to make my own matting.   I honestly don't know why I thought this project was something that I could accomplish.  One, I'm not a perfectionist.  I'm more of a let's hurry to get to the finished product kind of girl.  Two, I didn't really have the sharpest Xacto knife blade.  Anyways, I measured the picture that I would like to put in the frame, then measured the poster board so that I could cut out the middle portion.

Also, the picture doesn't portray the poster board in the best condition.  The picture is not lying, it really is in pretty bad shape.  It has been laying around for a few years now.  I bought it for a school project and never used it.  So, it has been through about three moves, and countless tramples by Maggie.  I have a plan to hide the imperfections.

After cutting out the middle, I decided to paint the back of the poster.  It was in way better condition than the front.  I painted the backing black using the same spray paint as on the frame.

Please pay no attention to the not so straight lines, like I mentioned above my reasons why matting probably wasn't the best idea for me.

After waiting impatiently for the paint to dry, I put it back together.  I used the original poster, just put it upside down.  The poster board was actually a little bit too small for the frame oops!

I put all of those little nails back in to hold it together and then hung it in my office.  I think it adds a little something to the room, especially since I rent and can't paint the cold white walls.

So, let's take a look back at the beginning.

Yucky gold frame with outdated poster.

And now...

Beautiful black frame with my Great Grandma's high school diploma from 1923.

I think that it's a complete improvement.
