Between work and home I barely have time to get all of my to-do items completed. Plus, just looking at my monstrous list can make me feel overwhelmed. I have been trying to tackle my ever growing list into a more manageable size. At work lately it seems that everything has been hitting all at once, so the boss and I have devised a plan call the trifecta effect. Basically, we pick three items each day to cross off the list. That way we only look at those three tasks and not the whole list. By looking at only a portion of the list it doesn't cause that much of a panic attack.
I have taken this trifecta approach home with me and have started accomplishing three tasks each night. That way I can still enjoy my evening and keep my place sparkling. A while back I was on one of my favorite blogs, iHeart Organizing and she shared her family's cleaning routine. Jen has tasks divided between daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annually. I read this post and thought how it was a genius idea! Except at the time I didn't know how to incorporate my own way of doing this. Sadly, my to-do list hasn't evolved as greatly as Jen's or as pretty.
Some of my weekly tasks stay the same, while others don't. However, sitting down every Sunday night and coming up with a to-do list. I keep writing until all of my tasks are in front of my eyes, no matter how long the list gets - I keep writing.
The night before is when I choose which tasks I want to tackle the next day. Through out the week my list continues to grow, but I always attempt to finish all of the tasks by Saturday so I can have Sunday free to myself.
Here is my weekly to-do list in all of its glory, including my pictures and side notes. For some reason I feel more accomplished checking something off that I wrote out by hand, call me crazy! As you can tell, it's already Friday and I am not even half-way through my list. That's okay, some of these items are constant and appear on every week's list (the cleaning for instance!). The other items will get done by tomorrow, so Sunday I can sit back and relax.
Check out Jen's blog, iHeart Organizing here. I promise it's filled with tons of organizing tips and inspiration.
Thanks so much for the shout out and the kind email! I totally heart your trifecta idea, it's pretty genius and it's great that you can incorporate it into your personal list!
ReplyDeleteKeep on doing what you are doing. We are always changing here too, as life changes. It's all about learning from what is slowing us down, and make changes to better our lifestyles. You have done exactly that, and it will continue to evolve.
Congrats again! And if you are looking to pretty up your checklist, you could download a daily goals template I had created here: http://www.docstoc.com/docs/55844220/IHeart-Daily-Goals-Checklist
Best wishes!

Yup, I have a similar list going it's just not on paper. I do like getting everything done on Saturday, but I typically relax on Saturday and then finish my list on Sunday... No matter how hard I try I still go grocery shopping and do laundry every Sunday. Hope you get a bunch done today so you can enjoy tomorrow. I have the entire week off (mandatory furlough from the school district)so I'm going to try to get a bunch done in the first half so I can enjoy the second half in a food coma!
